The Kingdom of Lanna was established in the late 12th century by King Mangrai of the Lavachakkaraj dynasty who founded the city of Chiang Rai, named after himself. After the war with the kingdom of Hariphunchai (modern day lamphun) in 1281, he relocated his capital to Chiang Mai and expanded his territories throughout the entire northern part of Thailand, northern Vietnam, some part of Laos and The Sipsongpanna which is modern day Yunnan province of China.
